artist statement

I delight in the process of creating smoke fired vases and mosaics. My work is about, exploration, pushing boundaries, not always listening to what people say they like. It’s about being true to oneself.

Mosaics are inspired from life on Salt Spring. Pieces are individually cut, reassembled and selectively smoked to encourage gentle blushes and shadows. Vases are slab and or coil built, bisqued and pit fired.

These pieces were born from the earth and fired in the earth.  To create them, you have to take chances, to risk losing a lot in order to gain sometimes very little. 

By the magic of fire, by the cut, turn and pinch of the hand maybe just maybe, you create that one very special piece that speaks to the observer.  If it elicits a smile, an emotion, if it begs to be touched and observed then that is good.
