Mel Williamson
biographyMel was born on Salt Spring Island and studied design and illustration at Capilano University in North Vancouver. Years of working in graphic design left her longing to return to Salt Spring, escape the computer and grab a paint brush.
Her paintings are unapologetically realistic, while celebrating the character of the paint. In using the largest paintbrush possible, she lets the painting process show and never attempts to hide the human hand. A quality of mystery is maintained in her imagery by stating only the necessary, using soft hidden edges to imply the subject rather than fully describe it. Contemporary artists who inspire her include: Quang Ho, Kim Cogan, Carolyn Anderson and Jeremy Lipking. Mel was honoured to win the award for "Best Work on Canvas or Board" at the juried Sidney Fine Art Show 2013. where to see or read moreshows: Mel is represented by Steffich Fine Art on Salt Spring.
