Michela Sorrentino
biographyMichela Sorrentino was born in Montreal and currently lives on Salt Spring Island. she studied Fine Art at Capilano College in North Vancouver as well as Les Beaux Arts and the ESMOD Textile Design Program in Paris. she is a partner with Hermani + Sorrentino Design on Salt Spring since 1994.
The artist creates and communicates with inner conversations and language that resides deep inside each of us and which, for the most part, remain private. She uses a primal language of arranging colour, forms and marks with a poetic attempt to make visible what is normally left invisible. These works are thought provoking and offer the viewer a catalyst for reflective pause and response subliminally. By working intuitively and often with no defined subject matter she allows the painting to unfold layer by layer, line by line —to reveal a story. Its story. Using line, colour, texture and form, Sorrentino's work has a richly layered quality to it. Although not premeditated, her work often depicts everyday objects, botanical references and repetitive ryhthms and text. These all combined allow the viewer to experience her personal process of an intuitive subtle inner narrative. The narrative is created by the use of stream of consciousness, an inner language brought out through Sorrentino's mark making, choice of colour palette as well as the placement of shape and form. The layering of text over shapes and colour, and textures layered over line and rythms all create a richly visual experience for the viewer to unravel.
